The stadium jacket has a rich history rooted in post-World War II souvenir culture and the American sportswear of the 1970s–90s. The precursor to the modern stadium jacket is the Sukajan, or “souvenir jacket,” which originated in post-World War II Japan. American servicemen stationed in Yokosuka brought their regulation bomber jackets to local tailors, who used leftover parachute silk and satin to create custom embroidered pieces. These jackets typically featured Japanese motifs — such as dragons and cherry blossoms — alongside American symbols, often serving as personal mementos of their service abroad.
