Romance Isn't Dead

--

When you think of the 80s, neon leggings and blue eyeshadow may spring to mind. Or maybe, it's high-powered shoulder pads and pointy stilettos. Or maybe, the anarchist in you jumps to the post-punk 1970s hangover of loose jeans, band tees or buttoned up collared shirts. As the 1980s were ushered in a blend of the old punk style merged with the new romantic era and created an iconic subculture that YMC are paying homage to with their SS20 collection.

British subcultures have always been a point of reference for London brand You Must Create and Britain’s rich musical history has been a driving force of shaping the fashion that has defined these eras. The inspiration YMC has taken from this era is subtle but subversive. Stylised, easy to wear pieces that last the test of time flow from the designs to create modern and innovative looks that reimagine old classics and give a fresh take on wardrobe staples. Plentiful patterns and military inspirations reflect the best of this standout era and are disrupted in true anarchistic style with mixes of florals (Gordon Floral Polo), Airtex (Vegas S/S Navy Shirt) and brush stroke camouflage (Perhacs Camo Dress).

In reality though, the application is up to you. YMC have given us the tools, but ultimately, YOU must create. Take the core inspiration of this season and wear every print together, perfectly mismatched, or pair it back with a delicate, gentle nod to the new romantics with the Sheer Kaleidoscope Shirt and a pair of simple Geanie Ecru Jeans. Who said romance is dead?
