Rei Kawakubo started making clothes under the label Comme Des Garçons in 1969 and quickly established an aesthetic that was as much aligned with conceptual art as fashion. Despite claiming that she never intended to start a revolution, forty years later Kawakuba is still making clothes with the same startling aesthetic and uncompromising ideals.
Kawakubo’s Comme Des Garçons Comme Des Garçons line encompasses what the designer herself elects to wear on a daily basis. Mid length skirts, cropped trousers and tracksuits are crumpled, frayed and adorned with polka dots and lace to create an elevated everyday uniform.
