Japanese Denim

New washes and styles for SS18 from our denim favourites, OrSlow and Chimala. But what’s so special about Japanese selvedge denim?

Noriko Machida, founder of Chimala, has created a brand that is known for their meticulous attention to detail. Woven on pre-war looms, each garment is then hand-finished and hand-distressed by a small artisan team. Her collections are made in small batches and are only available in a handful of stockists worldwide.

OrSlow designer Ichiro Nakasu’s description of his brand’s philosophy sums up what we love about Japanese denim:

“We design clothes “slowly.” Here the term “slowly” means:

· Crafting original clothes carefully.
· Creating clothes that are adaptable to different styles of different times.
· Presenting the antithesis of a fast-moving modern society and fashion industry and slowing it down.”
